Hooked On Phonics Works for Me
Hooked On Phonics Worked for our Family
We started with hooked on phonics nearly twenty years ago when our oldest daughter was turning four. We had both been taught using the phonics method and we had decided to homeschool so hooked on phonics was and easy decision and hooked on phonics worked for us. We have six children and all six of them have been taught using the hooked on phonics as the basis for all of their homeschooling.
We have six very diverse children. Our oldest child was a self starter and very determined so with a little coaching and minimal effort she was quickly reading and very proud of her abilities. Our second child was more easy going but like doing what big sister was doing and so with a little more effort and time commitment on our part she was soon reading the hooked on phonics easy read books.
Things changed with our third child (the first boy) he was more about enjoying life and had no interest in school. We had high expectations because of the ease of doing the first two and so we expected at age four he should have been reading also. In hind sight that was our mistake and we could have saved alot of frustration if we had introduced hooked on phonics alphabet cards later than we did. Our fourth child is sheer genius. She eventually went on to teach herself trigonometry and calculus and physics. At three she wanted to do what her sisters were doing and so she started to read the hooked on phonics practice books and while she was listening to the hooked on phonics tapes we got our fourth child to start reading.
Our youngest two children are special needs and we adopted when the fifth child was almost 5 years old. Dealing with autism and reading was something we had not been prepared to do. We had both taken education classes in college but neither of us had any special education degrees. We were pleasantly surprised to plunge into hooked on phonics special needs style (we read some books and did some research) and it worked quite well. Our fifth child is in high school homeschooling and reads well above his grade level.
Our sixth child has more severe autism and has struggled with even listening to the hooked on phonics dvds. We are still working with her and she is making steady progress and we are hopeful in the next eighteen months that we will have finished our last course in hooked on phonics (until the grandkids start coming).
